Dakar — Following the Conference of Presidents (CDP) held this Friday, June 19th, Senegal’s National Assembly has finalized an ambitious legislative agenda. Key bills concerning the Labor Code and the Social Security Code are slated for commission review on Saturday, June 20th, with their subsequent passage to a plenary session scheduled for Monday, June 22nd.
However, significant attention remains fixed on the proposed constitutional revision bill. Ousmane Sonko, the President of the National Assembly, provided a detailed update on this critical text to members of the Bureau. He highlighted that, to date, no official feedback had been received from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the mandatory opinion formally submitted to the presidency. This lack of response from the Executive branch has raised questions about the progress of this vital piece of legislation, central to governance in Africa.
In response to the Executive’s silence, the head of the Parliament has established a firm deadline of Monday, June 22nd. Should no presidential feedback materialize by this date, the Bureau of the National Assembly will be immediately convened to advance the legislative process, irrespective of the presidency’s stance. Ousmane Sonko emphatically reiterated his determination to see this constitutional revision proposal thoroughly examined and voted upon before the current ordinary session concludes. This move underscores the dynamics of African politics and the interplay between legislative and executive powers.
Furthermore, during the meeting, the President of the National Assembly took the opportunity to remind attendees that the Parliament is still awaiting the submission of two crucial financial documents: the Rectifying Finance Law (LFR) and the Budget Orientation Debate (DOB) document. Both texts have already received approval from the Council of Ministers. The legislative and executive branches are now in a tense standoff, with a clear countdown underway in Senegal’s political landscape.
The situation continues to unfold.
