Senegal politics: Malick Gackou urges Pastef unity amid rising Kiiraay movement

Pastef leadership calls for unity as new political formation gains ground

Senegal. Dakar. 10/2016. Malik Gakou,President du Grand Parti chez lui.

Facing growing defections to the new Kiiraay movement, former minister and Pastef leader Malick Gackou has issued a strong call for party members to preserve unity and uphold the movement’s founding principles.

As several Pastef officials and activists announce their transition to Kiiraay—President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s emerging political platform—Malick Gackou has urged members of the Ousmane Sonko-led party to remain steadfast and cohesive.

In a direct message to “Patriots,” the veteran politician emphasized the critical need for discipline and unwavering commitment to the values that define Pastef’s political vision. Gackou argued that the movement’s credibility and long-term success hinge on the collective dedication and exemplary conduct of its leadership.

“To safeguard our sovereign ambitions and solidify President Ousmane Sonko’s leadership, we must stand united and demonstrate integrity in our public actions, all in service of our nation’s progress,” he stated. Addressing internal challenges, Gackou stressed that “exemplarity is our greatest strength,” urging militants to stay focused despite internal pressures.

His intervention comes at a pivotal moment as Kiiraay, the Patriotic Republicans, gains traction as the alleged presidential party of Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Multiple former Pastef members have already joined Kiiraay, citing their commitment to supporting the Head of State’s agenda. In response, Gackou is mobilizing efforts to reinforce cohesion within Pastef as the ruling party navigates a delicate phase ahead of upcoming political milestones.
