New zealand eyes world cup 2026 knockout stage after belgium clash
New Zealand on the brink of fifa world cup 2026 knockout stage after belgium showdown
New Zealand’s head coach Darren Bazeley remains optimistic despite a disappointing result in the recent group match, stating that victory against Belgium on Friday would secure their place in the World Cup 2026 Round of 16. “We know we have to beat Belgium now,” Bazeley emphasized in a post-match press briefing.
The All Whites’ manager acknowledged the task ahead, pointing out that while Belgium presents a formidable challenge, New Zealand has shown resilience in past encounters, including draws against Iran and Egypt. “If we can replicate our best performances from those matches, we have a real chance. We are fully aware of what needs to be done—beat Belgium,” he asserted.
The loss to Egypt left a bitter taste for the English tactician. “It was a game we should have won. It hurts not to come out on top. We were dominant in the first half—controlling possession and playing comfortably. But in the second half, we failed to maintain our rhythm and quality. Egypt stepped up their intensity and played very well. It’s incredibly frustrating,” Bazeley admitted.
“We were pleased at halftime, but we didn’t get ahead of ourselves. We struggled slightly on crosses and transitions,” he continued. “Then Egypt turned the game around. Everyone is devastated and frustrated. It’s hard to watch another team celebrate on the pitch. We led in both our first two matches and created chances—we just need to convert them. Anything can happen when the score is close,” he concluded.
