Impressed by his development, Leverkusen activated a buy-back clause worth €8 million before selling him permanently to Juventus.
Interestingly, Chelsea had reportedly tabled an even higher offer of €40 million, but Alajbegovic chose Juventus after being promised an immediate starting spot. His decision reflects a growing trend among young players who prioritize game time over financial gains—a factor that could influence future transfer strategies.

The question remains: why did Leverkusen let go of a player they clearly believed in? Speaking on the matter, sporting director Simon Rolfes explained, « After his time in our youth system, Kerim has made significant strides, particularly at Salzburg. However, our squad has become increasingly competitive at his position. Given the overall value of the transfer package, we concluded that this was the right move for all parties involved. »*
The club’s reasoning is understandable. Leverkusen’s recent recruitment drive has brought in high-profile talents like Afonso Bastardo Moreira (€29.5 million from Olympique Lyonnais) and Eliesse Ben-Seghir (21 years old).
