Morocco and un Economic Commission for Africa strengthen south-south cooperation
The strengthening of cooperation between Morocco and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) was the focal point of a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa. The gathering brought together Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, with Claver Gatete, UNECA’s Executive Secretary.
During the discussions, both sides explored avenues to deepen their partnership, with particular emphasis on Rabat’s unwavering commitment to African integration and continental development. Mr. Gatete commended Morocco’s pivotal role in hosting the 58th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development in Tangier from March 28 to April 3. He also highlighted the Kingdom’s sustained support for UNECA’s initiatives.
The UN official praised Morocco’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system, describing it as an innovative and integrated model. He noted its unique ability to align skill development with cutting-edge technologies—such as artificial intelligence—and the evolving demands of industrialization. In light of Africa’s rapid economic and technological transformations, Mr. Gatete urged broader adoption of this model, encouraging other African nations to draw inspiration from Morocco’s success stories to foster best practices across the continent.
Since its establishment in 1958, the UN Economic Commission for Africa has maintained a strong partnership with Morocco, actively participating in its programs and contributing to regional cooperation and the acceleration of Africa’s economic integration.
