Unfpa and Morocco strengthen human rights partnership at geneva meeting

At the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Morocco reaffirmed their collaboration on key human rights, health, and gender equality priorities. Alfonso Barragues, UNFPA’s deputy director of the liaison office, highlighted the importance of this partnership following talks with El Habib Belkouch, Morocco’s interministerial delegate for human rights.

The cooperation focuses on improving maternal health and reducing pregnancy- and childbirth-related mortality. UNFPA also aims to intensify efforts against violence toward women and girls, and to combat harmful practices such as early marriage.

A central element of the program is expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services. Barragues stressed the need for equitable coverage across Morocco, bringing services closer to communities through a reinforced network of primary health centers. He stated: “Access to health services, including sexual and reproductive health, must be ensured throughout the country—not only in hospitals but also at the primary care level.”

Beyond specific health topics, UNFPA supports Moroccan institutions in designing and implementing public policies. This assistance reaches several ministries, including those for Education, Health, and Social Protection. Barragues explained that the organization is committed to “assisting the relevant ministries in formulating and executing public policies,” reflecting a comprehensive, integrated approach.

A partnership grounded in local action

This collaboration is based on the conviction that genuine impact of public policies depends on local implementation. UNFPA reaffirms its work with women’s and youth organizations, in close coordination with Moroccan authorities.

The partnership with the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights follows a logic of monitoring and applying international recommendations, translating commitments into concrete actions on the ground. Barragues added: “For us, the partnership with the DIDH is a strategic partnership,” illustrating UNFPA’s desire for a lasting dynamic alongside Morocco to promote and effectively implement human rights.
