Togo’s aviation takes flight with sustainable fuel and infrastructure boost
Togo is actively advancing its aviation sector’s modernization through the formalization of two pivotal agreements. These collaborations are specifically designed to champion the energy transition within air transport and significantly bolster the supply infrastructure at Lomé International Airport. Forged between the Société aéroportuaire de Lomé-Tokoin (SALT) and T-OIL, a Togolese state-owned enterprise focused on procurement, these partnerships outline the phased introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) across the nation. Furthermore, they include plans for constructing a new Jet A1 storage facility with a 1,500 cubic meter capacity directly on the airport grounds.
The conventions were formally signed during the 2026 Annual Assembly of African Airports and Airlines (AATCE), which took place in Lomé. These initiatives are integral to a broader policy framework aimed at supporting the decarbonization of air travel while simultaneously enhancing the resilience of the energy infrastructure critical to the aviation industry.
Through this strategic undertaking, Togolese authorities are clearly demonstrating their ambition to solidify Lomé’s standing as a prominent regional aviation hub. The adoption of sustainable aviation fuel also addresses the escalating global demands for reducing carbon emissions within the aeronautical sector, as airlines and airport platforms face increasing pressure to integrate cleaner energy solutions.
The planned construction of the new Jet A1 storage tank is expected to further secure the fuel supply for aircraft operating from the Togolese capital. This enhancement will also support the projected increase in air traffic across the sub-region, ensuring operational efficiency and reliability.
This progressive momentum aligns perfectly with the vision championed by the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who has prioritized infrastructure modernization and energy transition as key pillars of national development. Both the Ministers responsible for Transport, and Energy and Mineral Resources, have lent their full support to this initiative, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering an air transport system that is more sustainable, resilient, and better integrated into major regional and international networks.
