Gabon hosts leaders from DRC and Guinea-bissau for independence day celebrations

In a significant diplomatic move, the presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Guinea-Bissau are set to arrive in Libreville for official visits coinciding with Gabon’s 66th independence day celebrations. The announcement was made by Théophane Nzame Nze Biyoghe, spokesperson for the Gabonese presidency, via a formal statement.

High-profile visits timed with national milestone

Félix Tshisekedi, President of the DRC, is scheduled to land in Libreville on August 15, ahead of the August 17 independence commemoration that marks the nation’s liberation in 1960. General Horta N’Tam of Guinea-Bissau will follow on August 18, the day after the festivities. Both visits aim to bolster bilateral relations and deepen cooperation between Gabon and these two West and Central African nations.

Regional context shapes diplomatic agenda

The visits unfold against the backdrop of evolving political landscapes in all three countries. In Gabon, these engagements align with ongoing institutional stabilization following the August 2023 coup that brought Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to power after ousting Ali Bongo Ondimba. His subsequent election in April 2025 restored constitutional order, reinforcing the country’s return to democratic governance.

The DRC, under President Tshisekedi’s leadership since his re-election in December 2023, continues to face persistent armed rebellion in the eastern regions. The M23 rebel group maintains control over several zones, despite multiple regional and international mediation efforts aimed at restoring stability.

Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau remains in a transitional phase following a military takeover in November 2025. At the time, General Horta N’Tam was installed as interim president after the removal of Umaro Sissoco Embalo, just three days after a disputed presidential vote. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup, suspending the electoral process and prolonging the transition period amid ongoing negotiations between military authorities and civilian leaders.
