Sahel states condemn Niamey airport attack, cite foreign sponsorship

Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport experienced a devastating terrorist assault on the morning of Thursday, June 18, 2026. The attack, officially attributed to the Groupe de soutien à l’islam et aux musulmans (GSIM), Al-Qaeda’s regional affiliate in the Sahel, resulted in a tragic loss of 11 soldiers and two civilians. Additionally, 22 assailants were killed during the confrontation.

In a strong statement, the Confédération des États du Sahel (AES), comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, vehemently denounced this “cowardly and treacherous” aggression that targeted the vicinity of Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport.

“It is evident that this latest assault, specifically the attempt to seize control of Niamey Airport, aimed to cripple the operational capabilities of the Nigerien Armed Forces,” the AES declared in its communiqué. “Ultimately, the intent was to reverse the recent successes against armed terrorist groups, who have faced consistent defeats in the field.”

The organization further asserted that this deadly incident, which claimed the lives of 11 service members and two non-combatants while 22 attackers were neutralized, represents “a renewed display of terrorist violence receiving backing from foreign state sponsors.”

This recent aggression follows a previous offensive in January 2026 against Niamey’s Air Base 101, also located near Diori Hamani International Airport. That earlier incident triggered significant diplomatic strain, with Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani publicly accusing various foreign leaders of complicity in efforts to destabilize the nation. These serious allegations provoked strong international responses.

Despite these challenges, the Confédération des États du Sahel affirmed in its declaration that such assaults will not compromise its unified security strategy. “Far from undermining the momentum driving our confederal dynamic, these recurring and externally directed attacks only serve to fortify the sacred unity among the people of the AES,” the leaders warned. “This unity rallies around the vision of their Heads of State in their collective struggle to safeguard the territorial integrity of member states, protect their populations, and ensure lasting peace throughout the Sahelian region.”
