Chad faces deadly cholera outbreak

(N’Djamena) A cholera outbreak in Chad has claimed the lives of 13 individuals and infected 239 others since July, according to health authorities.

Regional impact and ongoing response

The outbreak has primarily affected two regions: the northern province of Hadjer Lamis and Chad’s capital, N’Djamena. By August 3rd, health officials confirmed 239 cases in a country of nearly 21 million people.

Health authorities declared the epidemic on July 24th after the first fatalities were reported on June 13th. A vaccination campaign has already immunized 50,799 people, providing a critical defense against further spread.

Challenges in water and sanitation

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection caused by consuming contaminated food or water, remains a persistent threat in regions with limited access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. While modern water treatment systems have virtually eliminated the disease in wealthier nations, Chad continues to struggle with these basic health infrastructure gaps.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that inadequate access to potable water and sanitation remains the biggest obstacle in controlling the outbreak. Without these essential services, the risk of rapid transmission persists, especially in densely populated urban areas like N’Djamena.

Broader African health crisis

Chad is not alone in confronting cholera outbreaks. Several neighboring African nations, including the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have also reported recent cases. The disease’s resurgence highlights the ongoing challenges in public health infrastructure across the continent.

Early treatment through rehydration therapy or antibiotics can prevent fatalities, but delays in seeking medical care often lead to severe outcomes. Without prompt intervention, cholera can prove fatal within hours.
