Ousmane sonko’s touba visit: allegations of stolen funds and a direct challenge to president faye

Ousmane Sonko’s recent tour through Touba and Mbacké proved to be a pivotal moment, providing him with significant political platforms to unleash a series of powerful indictments. Following the launch rally for the party card sales drive, the leader of Pastef convened another gathering in “Ngacc.” There, he initiated his address with a scathing attack on certain political figures, whom he accused of pledging allegiance to the Head of State solely to secure positions of power. These individuals, he claimed, are “scrambling at the doors of the palace, desperate to become ministers of the Republic,” a behavior he deemed fundamentally contrary to Pastef’s core principles.

He starkly contrasted this perceived opportunism with the ethical standards expected of his own ministers: “A Pastef minister does not engage in theft, nor does he inflate public contracts. Should his honor be compromised, he resigns.” He further emphasized the movement’s identity, adding, “There is no point in possessing all material wealth if one must bow down when passing before others. We are people of principle.”

Another explosive revelation from the Pastef leader concerned the alleged channeling of misappropriated public funds into the holy city. “In recent times, money has been funneled into Touba. This is the nation’s money, and it is stolen money,” he asserted emphatically. He clarified that this influx of funds “is not intended for political purposes” but rather serves to fulfill “political demands.” This statement is poised to ignite a fierce controversy, indirectly impacting the delicate relationship between the government and the revered religious city.

The climax of his discourse was a direct challenge aimed at President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Ousmane Sonko recounted remarks he attributed to the Head of State, allegedly directed at general directors closely associated with Pastef: “You cannot be my general directors and simultaneously work for the election of another individual in 2029.”

Denouncing this warning, Sonko retorted, “If he so desires, he can dismiss all Pastef-affiliated general directors by Wednesday.” He stressed that these executives “are professionals with established careers and, for the most part, earned significantly more” prior to their appointments, implying they are not dependent on these positions for their livelihoods.

The leader of the National Assembly also criticized the President’s stance, suggesting that President Faye should be preoccupied with “other concerns” than transforming Pastef leaders into “messiahs.” He concluded with a severe caution regarding the rapid succession of appointments: “He will plunge this country into chaos with these general directors he is haphazardly recruiting.” This declaration signals a clear and public rift, indicating that relations between Sonko and Diomaye Faye appear more strained than ever.
