Welcoming the Gorée: Air Sénégal expands fleet with new Boeing 737-800
Air Sénégal welcomed a new Boeing 737-800, christened “Gorée,” into its fleet on Monday, a move the national carrier describes as a significant step forward in boosting its operational capacity and reinforcing Senegal’s aerial independence. The announcement came on September 7, 2026, in Dakar.
This addition was made possible through financial backing from the Senegalese state, channeled via the Ministry of Land and Air Transport overseen by Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Air Sénégal frames the purchase as a reflection of the government’s commitment to equipping the nation with an airline capable of meeting its economic, tourism, and international ambitions, under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The aircraft, a single-aisle member of the Boeing 737 NG family, is celebrated for its adaptability on short and medium-haul routes. It is expected to grant the airline added capacity to expand its route network. Configured in two classes, the plane seats a total of 174 passengers: 12 in Business Class and 162 in Economy Class, outfitted with Recaro seats. Measuring 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, it also comes equipped with three lavatories and three galleys.
The choice of the name “Gorée” carries profound meaning. Gorée Island, a poignant memorial to the transatlantic slave trade and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a global symbol of memory, resilience, and intercultural dialogue. Air Sénégal presents this aircraft as a “flying ambassador” destined to carry that name across Africa and beyond, linking the nation’s storied past to its outward-looking future and its diaspora.
Beyond its symbolic resonance, this new unit is also intended to bolster Senegal’s tourism sector by easing visitor arrivals and enhancing connectivity with regional and international markets. The airline outlines several strategic goals tied to the acquisition: strengthening operational capacity, supporting its growth trajectory, consolidating Senegal’s aviation autonomy, and elevating the passenger experience.
