Benin political shifts: ld party stays in opposition as fcbe joins government

The Les Démocrates (LD) party has reaffirmed its commitment to remaining in the opposition in Bénin following an extraordinary national council meeting centered on « structural challenges and future prospects ». This declaration comes after the Forces cauris pour un Bénin émergent (FCBE) officially exited the opposition bloc following the presidential election victory of Romuald Wadagni.

In a final communiqué presented by Lambert De La Pierre Sodji, the party led by Nourénou Atchadé emphasized that its opposition status has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Interior since April 26, 2022. « The LD party solemnly reaffirms its allegiance to the political opposition », the statement concluded.

The political formation underscores the vital role of a credible, structured, and responsible opposition in any thriving modern democracy. The party’s leadership vowed to maintain a constructive political opposition against the incoming administration of Romuald Wadagni, while pledging to uphold the nation’s republican institutions.

FCBE transitions from opposition to government alignment

The LD’s stance arrives amid a reshaped political landscape post-presidential elections. The FCBE, historically seen as a moderate opposition force, has formally abandoned its opposition status following a leadership meeting. The party justified its decision based on the electoral outcomes of the recent presidential and legislative contests.

Paul Hounkpè, the FCBE’s presidential candidate, secured just 5.95% of the vote—a distant second to Romuald Wadagni, who was declared the winner. Additionally, the FCBE failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly during the legislative elections, further influencing its strategic pivot.

Yaya Garba, a senior member of the FCBE’s leadership, acknowledged the electorate’s clear mandate, stating, « The people have spoken, and we must align with their choice ». The party also extended congratulations to outgoing President Patrice Talon for his two terms and the peaceful conduct of the presidential elections.

With the FCBE’s departure from the opposition, Les Démocrates now stand as the primary party officially claiming opposition status. Notably, the LD was absent from the presidential race after failing to gather the required political endorsements under Bénin’s electoral code. The party’s extraordinary council meeting coincides with the nation’s preparations for the formal installation of the new executive leadership following the finalization of presidential election results.
