Us citizens in Mali urged to exercise extreme caution in Bamako amid heightened security
American citizens currently in Mali, particularly in the capital city of Bamako, have been advised by the U.S. Embassy to exercise extreme caution in their movements due to intensified security measures implemented across key areas of the city.
The embassy highlighted that Malian authorities have significantly bolstered security presence throughout Bamako, including the deployment of additional checkpoints, roadblocks, and potential closures of certain routes. These adjustments may lead to unexpected delays and disruptions in travel, especially on roads leading to the international airport named after Modibo Keita.
Heightened security protocols are expected to coincide with increased safety concerns during the upcoming religious festivities, such as the celebration of Tabaski (Eid al-Adha) on May 27. U.S. citizens have been urged to minimize non-essential travel within the country until the end of the month.
Additional precautions include avoiding crowded areas, protests, or demonstrations. The embassy strongly advises against attempting to bypass security barriers and encourages heightened situational awareness. Travelers are also reminded to:
- Review and update personal security plans;
- Maintain reliable communication channels;
- Keep travel documents current and easily accessible;
- Prepare contingency plans, including designated safe locations in case of emergencies.
