On Wednesday, June 24, President Romuald Wadagni conducted a high-level working visit to the European institution headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The mission was centered on establishing the foundations for a modernized partnership between Benin and the European Union (EU), tailored to tackle emerging development hurdles.
The President engaged in successive meetings with top EU leadership, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The session with António Costa provided an opportunity for both sides to review the primary pillars of bilateral cooperation. The objective is to breathe new life into a relationship built on mutual trust, regional stability, and shared interests. This dialogue reflects a commitment to a more robust and proactive diplomatic connection.
Discussions with Ursula von der Leyen focused on the specific prospects of deepening the EU-Benin alliance. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to accelerating cooperation across several strategic sectors, identifying three core priorities for the immediate future:
- Economic transformation and innovation: This pillar emphasizes industrialization, job creation, and the expansion of economic corridors linked to the Port of Cotonou. It also prioritizes the local processing of agricultural products and vocational training programs for young people.
- Territorial development and security: A significant focus will be placed on northern Benin, where increased support for local communities is planned to combat violent extremism. This will be achieved by strengthening essential infrastructure and broadening access to economic opportunities.
- Sustainable finance: Through the Global Green Bond Initiative, the partnership aims to facilitate the financing of sustainable infrastructure projects, particularly in renewable energy, transport, and agriculture.
The President of the European Commission highlighted that Benin remains a vital partner for the European Union in West Africa. She noted that the relationship is anchored in mutual confidence and a collective drive to improve the quality of life for the population.
For the Beninese presidency, this reinforced partnership is a strategic move to establish Benin as a leading regional center for growth, connectivity, and international investment within West Africa.
