Strategic partnership between France and Morocco deepens with lecornu’s visit

Following France’s National Day celebrations, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu embarked on a two-day official visit to Morocco, a pivotal moment in reshaping bilateral ties between the two nations. This engagement comes as King Mohammed VI conveyed a message to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that both countries have entered a landmark phase to elevate their exceptional partnership into a forward-looking blueprint. This strategic alignment is set to pave the way for a future royal visit to France, where a treaty formalizing this strengthened alliance will be signed.

In his first official trip to the Kingdom since assuming office in 2025, Lecornu arrived with a high-profile delegation of over a dozen ministers, including Jean-Noël Barrot (Foreign Affairs) and Laurent Nunez (Interior). The visit included private discussions with Moroccan counterpart Aziz Akhannouch, followed by a joint high-level meeting. The outcome of these talks is expected to yield multiple bilateral agreements spanning critical sectors such as trade, migration, justice, and defense.

Economic collaboration took center stage, with talks focusing on co-development initiatives across Africa. Leveraging Morocco’s role as a key logistical and financial hub, businesses from both nations are exploring joint ventures aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Kingdom’s robust trade momentum—intra-African exports surged by 20.7% in 2025—and its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) provide a secure framework for investments. Moreover, amid global geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s port infrastructure is emerging as a vital alternative route for trade flows connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Security cooperation remains a cornerstone of this partnership. Both France and Morocco share deep concerns over instability in the Sahel, where porous borders and escalating terrorist threats demand urgent action. By strengthening their joint security and migration strategies, the two nations aim to solidify a partnership that both governments seek to elevate to unprecedented levels.
