Senegal’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights under Ousmane Sonko’s leadership
Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko reaffirms tough stance on homosexuality
The Senegalese government, led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, has once again underscored its commitment to strengthening laws against homosexuality, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement. In a recent statement, Sonko defended the country’s sovereign right to determine its own legal framework regarding this sensitive issue, pushing back against international criticism.

In his address, Sonko made it clear that legal frameworks in Senegal apply equally to all individuals, regardless of social status or influence. He stated, “No one will be shielded from these laws, as they are designed to address the core issues at hand. The legislation is clear, and its enforcement will be unwavering.”
Reflecting on the historical context, the Prime Minister pointed to past inaction as a contributing factor to the current challenges. He argued, “This issue did not emerge overnight. Previous administrations failed to act decisively, allowing it to escalate to today’s levels.”
Sonko also addressed foreign criticism, particularly from Western partners, asserting that Senegalese society overwhelmingly supports the existing legal measures. He remarked, “The only opposition comes from outside our borders. We reject any unsolicited advice, especially from former colonial powers.” He further dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, stating that even some African intellectuals advocating for delays would not sway the government’s position.
The Prime Minister’s remarks signal a firm stance on maintaining Senegal’s legal and cultural sovereignty in matters of morality and governance.
