Homosexuality – Ousmane Sonko attacks again: “No one will be protected”
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has reaffirmed the Senegalese government’s resolve to strengthen legislation concerning homosexuality, emphasizing the critical need for strict enforcement of existing laws. Amidst a backdrop of international criticism, he firmly rejects external interference, asserting Sénégal’s sovereign right to determine its own policies on this sensitive matter.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again addressed the critical issue of tightening legislation regarding homosexuality within Sénégal, reiterating the executive’s firm stance on this sensitive topic. His recent remarks are part of an ongoing national dialogue concerning the rigorous enforcement of laws and the broader political direction of the government in matters of society Africa.
Speaking on the universal scope of legislative texts, the head of government underscored their impartial nature and uniform application across all segments of society. He explicitly stated: « It will not be a question of protecting the big fish because they are the real problems. When a law is voted, it is impersonal and applies in all its rigor. » This highlights a commitment to robust governance Africa, ensuring no one is above the law.
Continuing his address, Ousmane Sonko opined that the current situation, as he perceives it, is partly a consequence of previous inaction. He affirmed: « This phenomenon is not new, past regimes did not act as we do. If such were the case, the phenomenon would not have reached this level. » His comments suggest a perceived failure of former administrations to adequately address the issue, leading to its current prominence in African politics.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the external criticisms surrounding this matter, specifically targeting certain Western partners. He declared: « No one is against this law in Sénégal. The only criticisms come from the Occident, France in particular. We have no lessons to receive from them. » Furthermore, Ousmane Sonko unequivocally dismissed any notion of suspending the legislative process, asserting: « African intellectuals also attempt to interfere but there will be no moratorium. » This steadfast position reinforces Sénégal’s sovereign decision-making.
