Senegal assembly leader Sonko warns prime minister over no-confidence motion

In a bold declaration during a public gathering in Touba on Sunday, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, issued a stern warning to Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. The leader of the Pastef party, which holds a commanding majority in the Assembly, once again brandished the constitutional option of a no-confidence motion against the government.

With Senegal’s political climate already tense, Sonko emphasized that while his party retains the power to deploy this legislative tool, it will not be used recklessly. He stressed that no « blank check » has been granted to the executive branch, while reiterating his commitment to avoiding actions that could plunge institutions into chaos.

The assembly president’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of the government’s policies, particularly following the constitutional review’s invalidation and Sonko’s growing criticism of President Diomaye Faye. His firm stance in Touba signals a deepening rift between legislative and executive authorities in the country.
