Legal action launched against Ousmane Sonko over touba remarks

A legal complaint has been filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Dakar High Court against Ousmane Sonko, the former Prime Minister, current National Assembly President, and leader of the PASTEF party. The complaint was initiated by a collective representing the descendants of Serigne Touba, who are seeking an official investigation into remarks made by Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters.

The plaintiffs allege that Sonko declared, ‘Dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba,’ a statement they claim tarnishes the honor, reputation, and dignity of the sacred city and its residents.

Demands for clarification and evidence

The collective, identifying itself as Senegalese citizens, young intellectuals, and economic operators—along with descendants of Serigne Touba—has formally requested the Prosecutor to:

  • Open an investigation into the statements;
  • Summon Ousmane Sonko to clarify his remarks and provide supporting evidence;
  • Conduct all necessary inquiries to determine the validity or baselessness of the claims.

Allegations of reputational harm

The complaint argues that Sonko’s words directly undermine the moral standing of Touba, a city deeply revered in Senegalese Islamic tradition. The plaintiffs emphasize that such allegations, if unproven, could irreparably damage the city’s spiritual and social fabric.
