Congo mining awards: top civil servants honored for innovative mineral sector solutions

The Ministry of Mines celebrated a major milestone this week with the official award ceremony of the « Buanya Excellence Prize », recognizing groundbreaking contributions by top civil servants to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector.

The event, held at the Pullman Grand Hotel in Kinshasa on June 24, 2026, brought together key stakeholders including the Secretary General of Mines, senior officials from mining oversight bodies, jury members, and participants from the National School of Administration (ENA).

Forty-eight civil servants, organized into six teams, spent weeks developing comprehensive proposals on critical mining challenges. Their research covered:

  • Mining governance and transparency – Strengthening regulatory frameworks and tracking mineral flows
  • Combating fraud – Implementing stricter control measures in the supply chain
  • Artisanal mining regulation – Balancing livelihood support with formalization
  • Geological exploration – Identifying new deposits for future exploitation
  • Equitable revenue distribution – Ensuring mining benefits reach local communities
  • Sustainable project development – Designing environmentally responsible mining initiatives

a strategic vision for mineral wealth

Louis Watum Kabamba, Minister of Mines, emphasized that the DRC’s position as a global energy transition leader requires responsible mineral resource management. « Our mineral wealth must drive job creation, modern infrastructure, and quality social services, » he stated during the ceremony.

He challenged the laureates to become ambassadors of excellence, integrity, and change, stressing that future mining governance must prioritize:

  • Meritocracy – Recognizing and rewarding performance
  • Innovation – Encouraging creative solutions to sector challenges
  • Transparency – Ensuring open processes and accountability
  • Results-driven governance – Focusing on measurable impact

The initiative reflects the administrative reform agenda championed by President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and implemented under Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka. By engaging young administrative talent, the program aims to modernize public sector leadership and enhance governance in key economic sectors.
