Chad conducts inspection of flood prevention infrastructure in N’Djamena

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, and Housing, Mahamat Assileck Halata, conducted an on-site inspection of critical flood-prevention infrastructure in N’Djamena ahead of the rainy season. The June 25 visit focused on assessing the operational readiness of systems under the Integrated Project for Flood Control and Urban Resilience (PILIER).

Accompanied by technical teams, the minister toured key sites including the Lamadji pumping station, Chagoua warehouse, N’Djari canal, Toumaï Palace drainage channels, wastewater treatment facilities, Pedro construction site, and roadworks. A stop at the 7th arrondissement town hall warehouse allowed a review of flood-mitigation equipment and deployment strategies.

Minister Halata emphasized that this inspection aligns with ongoing government efforts to mitigate flood risks before seasonal downpours. Following recent heavy rainfall, an evaluation meeting was held to assess infrastructure improvements funded by the World Bank. At the Lamadji pumping station, the minister condemned the theft of critical electrical cables, which disabled several units. Despite this vandalism, the facility remains functional thanks to four operational pumps. New cables have been procured and are scheduled for delivery on July 1, with installation expected within 48 hours.

The inspection continued to the Sabangali pumping station and generator workshop in the 10th arrondissement. In the Toukra-Mousgoum neighborhood, the minister met residents whose homes were demolished by the 9th arrondissement town hall, assuring them of reconstruction plans. The tour concluded with a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to flood-resilient infrastructure, ensuring N’Djamena’s protection during the upcoming rainy season.

The PILIER project, supported by international partners, aims to enhance urban resilience through drainage systems, pumping stations, and wastewater management. These measures are designed to safeguard communities and improve long-term living conditions in Chad’s capital.
