Border security efforts have yielded significant results in northeastern Bénin. The apprehension occurred early in the morning, around 8:30 a.m., during what began as a routine inspection. Law enforcement personnel identified 23 travelers, all confirmed to be Nigerian nationals of Hausa ethnicity. Their declared destination was Burkina Faso.

Upon being brought to the police station for further questioning, the intercepted individuals detailed their journey. They stated they had departed from Tchaki, Nigeria, proceeding on foot and spending a night in Boukouro, a Béninese village situated near the border. Their stated intention was to reach gold panning sites in Burkina Faso in pursuit of gold.

Despite verifications confirming that all travelers possessed valid identification documents, police are delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding this journey. Particular scrutiny is being placed on their escort, a 20-year-old Béninese man. Hailing from Bassila and residing in Parakou, he is suspected of orchestrating this clandestine movement.

All individuals taken into custody have since been transferred to the Tchaourou police station. An active investigation is currently underway to fully elucidate this case and ascertain whether an organized migrant trafficking network is involved, reflecting the broader challenges in governance Africa.
