Algeria and Niger boost strategic energy cooperation
Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, recently engaged in a significant videoconference with Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Hamadou Tini. The high-level discussion centered on advancing and solidifying bilateral cooperation within the vital hydrocarbons sector, according to official reports from the ministry.
This crucial meeting, attended by senior officials from both nations’ ministries, provided an opportunity to review the latest endeavors by the Sonatrach group in the Republic of Niger. A particular focus was placed on the progress at the Kafra oil block. These activities stem directly from the Algero-Nigerien memorandum of understanding (MoU) on hydrocarbons, which was formally signed on March 24, 2026. This landmark agreement took place on the sidelines of the 2nd session of the Algero-Nigerien Joint Cooperation Commission, an event co-chaired by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine.
Furthermore, the discussions meticulously assessed the ongoing development and exploration work within the Kafra block. They also tracked the level of coordination maintained between the Sonatrach group, operating through its subsidiary Sonatrach International Production and Exploration Corporation (SIPEX), and the Nigerien Petroleum Company (SONIDEP).
During the talks, both parties underscored the critical importance of integrating Nigerien enterprises and companies into these energy projects. This strategic inclusion aims to foster local content development and provide robust support for Niger’s economic growth.
The ministers also explored avenues to enhance collaboration in crucial areas such as training, technology transfer, and the exchange of specialized expertise. This includes organizing comprehensive training programs for executives and technical personnel, alongside cultivating partnerships between the national companies of both countries, including Sonatrach, SONIDEP, and Naftal. Specific areas targeted for enhanced cooperation encompass the transport, storage, distribution, and the crucial security of petroleum product supply chains.
Concluding their productive exchange, the two ministers unequivocally reaffirmed their shared dedication to continuously strengthen bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector. They committed to the timely realization of all agreed-upon projects, thereby serving the broader goals of economic development and promoting deeper energy integration between Algeria and Niger.
