The fall of Kidal: a major setback for Russia’s Africa Corps in Mali

The collapse of a strategic stronghold

The loss of Kidal, a Tuareg bastion retaken in 2023, represents a devastating blow to Russian operations. Once the centerpiece of Vladimir Putin‘s military strategy in Africa, the Africa Corps is now facing a crisis that threatens the Kremlin‘s reputation as a global power.

A humiliating exit from northern Mali

On Sunday, April 26, the atmosphere in Kidal was one of total defeat. A long line of military vehicles was seen speeding away through the desert dust, pursued by the triumphant shouts of FLA (Front de libération de l’Azawad) rebels. These troops, members of the Africa Corps acting on behalf of the local junta, left the area following a negotiated agreement. However, the terms of their departure were far from honorable.

According to reports, the soldiers were systematically disarmed and recorded individually before being allowed to leave. As they retreated, rebels celebrated by waving the French flag—a pointed and ironic gesture directed at the shifting alliances in the region.

The end of a Russian success story

For many observers, this retreat marks the end of a significant chapter. Djenabou Cissé, a researcher at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique, points out that the capture of Kidal had been the only genuine strategic achievement for Russian forces since their arrival in Mali in 2021. Its sudden collapse serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of their influence in the Sahel.
