Tchad: opposition calls for protest against authoritarian drift
The political wing of the Wakit Tama movement has intensified its mobilization efforts ahead of a nationwide peaceful protest scheduled for May 16, 2026. During a press conference, the coalition sharply criticized what it describes as the authoritarian slide under the leadership of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
Journalists praised as defenders of truth
Wakit Tama highlighted the vital role played by Chadian journalists in exposing press freedom violations despite facing harassment, intimidation, and repression. The movement condemned the growing restrictions on media outlets, calling them a direct threat to democracy.
Political repression targets opposition leaders
Abdelazim Mht Abakar, spokesperson for Wakit Tama, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the protest aims to draw global attention to Chad’s deepening political crisis. He strongly condemned the recent eight-year prison sentences handed down to eight political leaders from the GCAP coalition, labeling the ruling as unjust and politically motivated.
The movement demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra and other detained activists. Wakit Tama accused the judicial system of being weaponized to silence dissent.
International silence fuels crisis
Criticizing the inaction of human rights organizations and international partners, the movement warned that the continued suppression of fundamental freedoms risks destabilizing the country further. Wakit Tama reiterated its call for mass participation in the upcoming protest, declaring that the Chadian people will no longer tolerate injustice or the erosion of their rights.
« The Chadian people are not asking for favors—they demand justice, freedom, and respect for human dignity, » Abakar declared, stressing that the protest is a historic opportunity to reclaim their voice against oppression.
