Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has been dismissed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
This decision was announced during a live broadcast on national television by the President himself.
The move brings to an end a period of strained relations between the two leaders, who once shared a close political partnership.
With Sonko’s removal, the entire government—including ministers and state secretaries—has been dissolved.
The dismissed Prime Minister took to social media to share his reaction, stating: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”
The dissolution of the government also means that President Faye will now appoint a new Prime Minister and form a fresh cabinet.
It’s worth noting that Sonko played a pivotal role in Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s rise to power in 2024. Unable to run himself, Sonko backed Faye as the presidential candidate, campaigning tirelessly alongside him. The election, held in a single round, saw Faye secure a decisive victory with over 54% of the vote.
