Sénégal: sonko leaves diomaye faye’s potential exclusion to pastef’s internal processes

The ongoing political discourse across Sénégal remains animated by the persistent rift between the Pastef party and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Amidst demands from certain party activists for the Head of State’s expulsion, Ousmane Sonko, a prominent figure within Pastef, indicated that this matter would be deliberated by the movement’s competent authorities “when the time is right.”

Speaking recently, the President of the National Assembly underscored Pastef’s highly organized and structured nature. He reiterated that any potential decision must strictly adhere to the party’s established statutes and procedures.

“This will be assessed at the appropriate juncture. Pastef operates as a deeply structured and organized party. It possesses very clear guidelines outlining the processes to follow and the grievances to examine before considering anyone’s exclusion or retention. The party is not simply me; it is the collective instances that will make this determination in due course,” Ousmane Sonko affirmed.

The Pastef leader, however, clarified that no such measure was currently under consideration. “We have not yet reached that point,” he added, emphasizing that the issue is not pressing.

sonko refrains from calling it ‘betrayal’

When pressed on allegations of “betrayal” leveled against President Diomaye Faye, Ousmane Sonko deliberately avoided using the term. He expressed a preference for framing the disagreement within a political context rather than a moral one.

“Notions of betrayal tend to reside more in the realms of morality and emotion. I choose to position myself on political ground,” he elaborated.

Sonko articulated his view that several commitments made to the Senegalese populace have not been upheld. More concerning, he perceives a lack of genuine intent to implement these pledges, a critical aspect of governance Africa needs to address.

“I believe today that certain commitments we made to the Senegalese people are not being honored, and there is no real will to respect them. As for betrayal, I leave that to the domain of ethics,” concluded the former Prime Minister, highlighting a significant point in African politics.

persistent tensions within the senegalese leadership

These statements emerge against a backdrop of considerable tensions among various factions within the Senegalese government. For several weeks, senior Pastef members and grassroots activists have criticized President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, accusing him of drifting from the core political agenda that propelled the party to power. This situation is closely watched by independent African journalism.

Despite these criticisms, Ousmane Sonko is currently prioritizing the party’s internal mechanisms, opting against any hasty decisions regarding the Head of State and seeking to maintain stability within society Africa.
