Niger and Bénin move toward diplomatic thaw with Wadagni visit

The President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, touched down in Niamey on Tuesday for an official visit that could signal a turning point in the strained relations between Bénin and Niger, which have been tense since the military takeover in Niger in July 2023.

At the airport, General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger’s transitional leader, personally greeted his Béninois counterpart. This meeting marks the first official visit by a Béninois head of state to Niger since the junta assumed power, highlighting the significance of the moment amid ongoing political and security frictions.

Fresh from a stop in Nigeria the day before, President Wadagni chose Niamey as his second stop, underscoring his commitment to strengthening ties with neighboring nations. Bénin’s presidency framed the visit as part of a broader push to revive dialogue with its immediate neighbors.

Shared security challenges take center stage

Talks between the two leaders are expected to focus heavily on security cooperation, as both countries grapple with rising jihadist activity along their shared border. Northern Bénin and western Niger have seen repeated attacks by armed groups linked to regional extremist networks over the past several years.

Signs of easing tensions had already emerged earlier when Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine of Niger attended President Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou. Meanwhile, Niger’s state media has recently amplified messaging that highlights the deep historical and cultural ties uniting the two populations.

A regional push for dialogue gains momentum

Following his time in Niamey, President Wadagni is set to continue his regional tour in Burkina Faso, another country governed by a military leadership and a close ally of Niger within the Alliance of Sahel States. This diplomatic push is widely seen as an effort to reopen channels of communication with Sahel capitals and foster a more collaborative regional environment.
