Niger adopts digital payments for vaccination campaign success
Niger boosts vaccination campaign efficiency with digital payments
The Niger government has revolutionized health campaign payouts by implementing a digital payment system for vaccination workers. During the April 2026 National Polio Vaccination Days in the Niamey region, over 1,200 health workers and community volunteers received mobile payments instead of cash, thanks to technical support from the World Health Organization in Niger.
How digital payments transformed vaccination logistics
This innovative approach delivered remarkable results:
- 99% of payments were processed within 48 hours of campaign completion
- Digital transactions ensured full traceability of all payments
- Administrative burdens and cash-handling logistics were significantly reduced
- Payment delays and associated fraud risks were eliminated
Training lays groundwork for nationwide digital health payments
The successful implementation followed an intensive capacity-building program. From September 29 to October 3, 2025, the WHO Niger office organized a digital payment training workshop for national and local vaccination stakeholders. Led by experts from the WHO Africa Regional Office, the session equipped the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene with essential skills to design and implement a robust national digital payment ecosystem.
Key benefits for Niger’s healthcare system
Digital payment systems for health workers provide multiple advantages:
- Enhanced efficiency through faster, automated payouts
- Improved transparency with complete transaction records
- Increased accountability in fund management
- Heightened motivation among field agents
- Better performance in public health interventions
The Niamey pilot project’s outstanding success paves the way for nationwide expansion. This model demonstrates Niger‘s commitment to leveraging technology for more effective health campaigns and sets a benchmark for other public health initiatives across the country.
