The inauguration of Chad’s newest solar energy facility in Adré has set a new benchmark for the country’s renewable energy sector. The official launch ceremony, held on August 7, 2026, in the presence of local leaders, government officials, and community representatives, underscores the nation’s strategic pivot toward sustainable energy solutions.

Situated in Adré, the administrative hub of the Assoungha department in the Ouaddaï region, the solar plant represents a cornerstone of Chad’s broader electrification and energy access initiatives. Spearheaded by the Rural Electrification and Energy Management Agency, this project aligns with national development goals aimed at enhancing electricity supply, improving livelihoods, and fostering economic growth in underserved regions.

During the event, the Mayor of Adré, Ahmat Abderrahim, emphasized the transformative potential of the project, calling it a testament to the local government’s dedication to energizing the region. The facility’s hybrid design—combining solar power with backup generation—ensures reliable energy access even during peak demand or low sunlight periods.

Younous Daoussa Mahamat, Director General of the Rural Electrification and Energy Management Agency, highlighted the project’s significance as more than just an infrastructure milestone. He framed it as a fulfillment of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s vision to make electricity accessible to all citizens, regardless of location. The President’s personal involvement in initiating the project was cited as a clear indication of the government’s commitment to balanced regional development and social equity.

The Adré solar plant boasts an impressive technical profile: 4,800 photovoltaic modules, each delivering 585 watts, for a total installed capacity of 2.808 megawatts-peak. The system includes a battery storage solution with a capacity of 7.52 megawatt-hours, two 500 KVA backup generators, and an extensive 5-kilometer medium-voltage and 10-kilometer low-voltage distribution network.

Prefect Dillo Bergou of the Assoungha department expressed deep gratitude on behalf of Adré’s residents, acknowledging the President’s leadership in driving development across the region. He also praised the collaborative effort of all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition.

The inauguration concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a guided tour of the facility. This event not only celebrates a major step forward in Chad’s renewable energy transition but also signals a broader shift toward inclusive, sustainable growth powered by clean technology.
