Morocco reaffirms unwavering support for Libya’s political reconciliation process

Morocco has once again affirmed its steadfast commitment to a political solution for Libya’s crisis, during a session of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) on Tuesday.
Speaking at the AU PSC meeting on Libya, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, reiterated the kingdom’s backing for national reconciliation efforts and inter-Libyan dialogue initiatives. He emphasized the need to consolidate progress and build consensus among Libyan parties.
Arrouchi underscored that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, as part of the UN-sponsored reconciliation process, remains a credible foundation for a lasting political resolution to the Libyan crisis. He called for preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as prerequisites for durable stability.
The diplomat also conveyed Morocco’s appreciation, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, for the African Union’s sustained efforts in promoting peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly those aimed at fostering a political solution to the Libyan crisis.
Arrouchi also recalled the meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten, which led to the signing of an agreement on January 7, 2026, in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the eastern government.
The ambassador further highlighted Morocco’s ongoing role in supporting the political process in Libya, through efforts to bridge the views of the various Libyan parties, who trust the kingdom’s mediation role.
These efforts are undertaken in line with international legality, the Skhirat Agreement outcomes, and the Bouznika understandings, aiming to foster a Libyan-led solution acceptable to all parties. In this regard, Morocco stresses the need to continue pursuing a political settlement, steering clear of military options.
