The newly elected leader of Mauritania’s opposition coalition assumes office amid a charged political landscape, highlighted by a massive gathering in the capital that drew tens of thousands of citizens. The event underscored both the public’s demand for change and the mounting pressure on the government to address pressing issues.

Key obstacles loom for the new coalition head

Mauritania stands at a crossroads, grappling with challenges that demand decisive action: a stalled national dialogue process, the resurgence of divisive rhetoric, heightened security threats along the eastern borders with Mali, and soaring living costs that have eroded public welfare.

Maouloud, the coalition’s new president, has voiced serious concerns over the current impasse. “The nation faces a critical moment,” he stated, “where the dialogue process remains frozen, preventing the inclusion of all stakeholders in shaping solutions.”

Unblocking dialogue tops the agenda

The stalled negotiations between the government and opposition parties now represent the coalition’s top priority. Maouloud has issued a direct appeal to President Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, urging him to intervene and remove obstacles—particularly the majority’s controversial attempt to introduce a third presidential term, despite constitutional limits and public opposition.

Instability in northern Mali has triggered a refugee influx, while border closures have disrupted traditional pastoral routes, devastating local livestock herders. Simultaneously, economic hardship continues to strain households nationwide.
