Mali tightens motorcycle restrictions amid rising insurgency threat

In a decisive move to counter escalating security threats, Malian authorities have suspended the operation of motorcycles with engine displacements of 125cc or higher outside major urban centers. The ban, which also extends to the importation and commercialization of such vehicles, comes as the nation grapples with intensified jihadist attacks and critical road blockades crippling access to Bamako.

Mali tightens motorcycle restrictions amid rising insurgency threat

Malian authorities announced a sweeping ban on motorcycles with displacements of 125cc or greater operating outside Bamako and other principal urban hubs, effective immediately.

This stringent regulation targets a primary transportation method frequently exploited by jihadist factions across the Sahel region. Mali remains embroiled in an unprecedented security crisis, compounded by coordinated assaults on key infrastructure and sustained road blockades isolating the capital since late April.

Exemptions apply to Bamako and administrative centers

Per the official statement broadcast on national television, the prohibition specifically excludes the District of Bamako, regional capitals, and other designated administrative subdivisions. Additionally, the decree mandates a complete halt to the import, transit, sale, and distribution of 125cc+ motorcycles and related accessories nationwide.

The move follows a series of devastating attacks between April 25 and 26, attributed to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—and the predominantly Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). Since April 30, these groups have enforced a blockade on multiple highways leading to Bamako, exacerbating the humanitarian and economic strain on the nation.
