Ligue 1 standings shift after Nantes-Toulouse match abandoned and sanctions imposed
French football’s governing body, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), has finalized its decision regarding the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC. The 34th and concluding fixture of the Ligue 1 season will not be replayed, and the result as it stood at the 22nd minute—0-0—has been confirmed, reshaping the league standings.
This ruling allows Toulouse FC to climb to ninth position in the Ligue 1 table, overtaking FC Lorient. With 45 points, Toulouse now shares the same tally as Lorient, but edges ahead due to a superior goal difference (3 against -1). This marks the club’s highest-ever finish since new investors RedBird took over. The decision ensures Toulouse’s upward trajectory continues, though it falls short of surpassing RC Strasbourg, which remains eighth with 53 points.
Despite the relief of avoiding a 3-0 forfeit defeat, FC Nantes faces sanctions for the pitch invasions and disturbances that cut short the match. The LFP imposed a closed-door match at the Stade de la Beaujoire and a two-game suspension for the Loire stand, from where most of the protesters emerged. The club, now relegated to Ligue 2, will begin its new campaign without fan support in that section of the stadium.
Match abandoned but not replayed
The decision came after supporters stormed the field following a protest against the club’s management, triggered by the season-ending relegation. Dozens of masked ultras launched flares onto the pitch, forcing an early end to the fixture. The LFP reviewed the incident report and opted to uphold the scoreline at the moment of abandonment rather than impose a default win for Nantes.
