Delegates at the African Peoples Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) ordinary congress in Abidjan delivered a strong mandate to Laurent Gbagbo, reaffirming his leadership at the helm of the party he established following his return from the International Criminal Court.
During the congress held at the Treichville Cultural Center in Abidjan on May 14, the former Ivorian president received overwhelming support from nearly 3,000 delegates. This marks his continued leadership of the political movement founded in 2020, shortly after his acquittal by the ICC on charges of crimes against humanity related to the 2010-2011 post-election crisis.
At 80 years old, Gbagbo had publicly announced in 2025 his intention to step back from active party leadership while remaining engaged in national politics. However, persistent calls from his supporters convinced him to continue his role as PPA-CI chairman.
This congress serves as a platform for the party to strengthen its internal structures and revitalize grassroots engagement. Party leaders view Gbagbo’s new term as an opportunity to facilitate a gradual transition toward emerging leaders within the movement.
