Ivorian government enforces zero tolerance after excision incident in Bongouanou

Bongouanou — The Ivorian Ministry of Women, Family, and Children has once again underscored its unwavering commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM), following the violent excision of five young girls in Bongouanou. This declaration comes in response to a distressing incident that unfolded in the early hours of June 30, 2026, in the Dioulakro neighborhood of the village of Kangandi.

The victims, aged between three and nine years, endured extreme violence during the procedure, resulting in severe complications. Medical reports indicated significant blood loss, urinary retention, and profound psychological trauma among the minors. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from local authorities and child protection advocates.

Prompt action by regional authorities led to the swift rescue of the children. The Regional Directorate of Women, Family, and Children, in collaboration with the Judicial Protection Service for Children and Youth and the Bongouanou police force, intervened immediately after receiving an anonymous tip. The girls were rushed to the Bongouanou Departmental Public Hospital, where they received urgent medical attention. Currently, they are under the protective custody of the Ministry, receiving comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support at a specialized center.

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are underway to identify and prosecute all perpetrators and accomplices involved in this heinous act. The Ivorian government has reiterated that FGM remains a criminal offense, punishable under national law with severe penalties.

This latest enforcement of the ‘zero tolerance’ policy aligns with the national commitments made by First Lady Dominique Ouattara on June 13, 2026, to combat gender-based violence (GBV) across Côte d’Ivoire. Authorities are urging communities to remain vigilant and report any instances or attempts of female genital mutilation without delay, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of young girls.
