Highlights of the week from 1 to 7 June 2026 in Burkina Faso
The week of 1 to 7 June 2026 was particularly eventful in Burkina Faso, covering a wide range of sectors including environment, economy, security, diplomacy, social affairs, sport and culture.
On the environmental front, the mass fish die-off observed at Ouagadougou’s dam n°3 drew significant attention. Laboratory tests carried out by the Ministry of Environment revealed high water acidity, elevated temperature and a severe lack of dissolved oxygen. According to the findings, this combination of factors led to massive suffocation of the fish.
In the economic sphere, the Burkinabe media landscape expanded with the official launch of Banque Finance Magazine, a new outlet focused on economic and financial issues.
At the same time, momentum around the Faso Mêbo initiative remains strong. Contributions have surpassed 261 million CFA francs, with the Kadiogo region leading the way. Adding to this dynamic, the Burkinabe diaspora in France contributed over 10 million CFA francs in support of peace efforts and development.
In agriculture, authorities announced plans to train 8,000 young people to help achieve food self-sufficiency. Another notable step forward occurred in Loumbila, where the seed farm—struggling for nearly two decades—has been revitalised thanks to the irrigation perimeter now receiving water. This revival is expected to allow year-round seed production.
The week also brought promising developments in the energy sector. Investors announced the upcoming construction of two thermal power plants with a capacity of 300 megawatts each in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. On the social side, a new project was launched to sustainably improve access to drinking water and sanitation for internally displaced persons, returnees and populations affected by the humanitarian crisis.
Regarding security, the Minister of State for Patriotic Defence, Major General Célestin Simporé, used the traditional flag-raising ceremony to commend the commitment of the fighting forces and urged them to continue their efforts in reclaiming national territory. In a similar vein, Stallions captain Bertrand Traoré expressed his support for those working to secure the country during a meeting with the Minister of Security.
In legal news, the former head of security for Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was sentenced to five years in prison in connection with the burning of a vehicle belonging to Serge Bayala, better known as Imhotep Bayala.
On road safety, the Ouagadougou Municipal Police reminded motorcyclists that they must use cycle lanes where available. Meanwhile, ONASER, in partnership with the National Gendarmerie, stepped up enforcement against non-compliant LED headlights and other dangerous traffic violations.
On the diplomatic front, Ouagadougou hosted Beninese President Romuald Wadagni for a friendship and working visit. Burkina Faso and Italy also celebrated 80 years of the Italian Republic, reaffirming the strength of bilateral ties.
Social highlights included the voluntary return of 120 Burkinabe migrants from Libya with the support of the International Organization for Migration. Meanwhile,
