Power cuts hit Niamey, Dosso and Tillabéri after technical fault on key network

Niamey, 8 June 2026 – The Nigerien Electricity Company (NIGELEC) announced on Monday that the disruptions in electricity supply affecting Dosso, Niamey, and Tillabéri are due to a technical incident on the Zone Fleuve power system.

The company stated that its teams detected the failure at around 1:50 a.m. and immediately mobilised technical crews to gradually restore service as quickly as possible.

While waiting for full restoration, NIGELEC said it has activated local generation units to reduce the impact of the outages on customers. The utility apologised for the inconvenience and assured that repair operations are ongoing.

Cautious crisis communication

Facing an urgent situation, NIGELEC management is trying to reassure bewildered customers while remaining cautious. Although the company confirms the fault occurred on the critical Zone Fleuve network, it has not yet disclosed the exact nature or technical origin of the major failure.

Behind the scenes, engineers have launched a race against time to diagnose the problem. Aware of the impact of these power cuts on daily life and the economy, the company urges patience while teams secure and fully restore the main system.

Strategic geographical axis paralysed

The incident’s impact is far from minor, as it strikes the country’s economic and administrative heart, including the capital Niamey and the key regions of Dosso and Tillabéri. To avoid a total blackout and keep vital infrastructure (hospitals, businesses, government offices) running, NIGELEC urgently activated its local production units.

This switch to backup generators, though insufficient to meet normal demand, serves as a temporary shield to mitigate major disruptions while awaiting reconnection to the national grid.
