Gabon tightens social media oversight with TikTok cooperation
The Gabonese government and TikTok have taken a significant step toward resolving months of regulatory tensions by opening a new channel of dialogue. During the AI for Good / WSIS Global Summit in Geneva from July 7 to 11, Digital Economy Minister Mark-Alexandre Doumba engaged in high-level discussions with TikTok’s regional leadership to assess the platform’s compliance with Gabon’s updated social media laws.
This collaborative meeting comes as Gabon intensifies its oversight of digital platforms operating within its borders. Key discussion points included stricter social media governance, enhanced user protections—especially for minors—and TikTok’s concrete commitments to align with the country’s legal framework. The platform’s representatives outlined progress in moderation practices and shared compliance milestones.
The TikTok delegation, led by Emir Gelen (Regional Director for Government Relations in the Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa) and Maria Cohn (Deputy Director of Government Relations), presented a comprehensive report on their moderation efforts for the first quarter of 2026. The company disclosed that 23,504 sensitive posts were removed during this period, including:
- 13,930 pieces of content deemed harmful to children’s safety and well-being;
- 10,784 posts promoting regulated goods, services, or activities.
Content involving sexualization, abuse, or physical harm to minors formed the bulk of these removals. TikTok also highlighted its upgraded moderation systems, boasting a 99.8% removal rate for violating content—often detected before user reports—and 92.9% before any views. Additionally, 97.2% of flagged material was taken down within 48 hours, while 4,352 accounts were permanently banned in the same period.
Following the negotiations, Gabon and TikTok agreed to extend their partnership for another year, aligning with the compliance timeline set by the country’s social media regulation ordinance. Minister Doumba emphasized the need to balance digital innovation with citizen protection, stressing the government’s priority to combat misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and other threats to youth mental health.
This initiative underscores Gabon’s commitment to fostering a regulated yet collaborative digital ecosystem. By holding platforms accountable while promoting dialogue, the nation aims to create a safer, more responsible online environment for its citizens.
