Gabon terminates long-standing fishing pact with european union

Gabon has officially concluded its Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) with the European Union (EU), choosing not to renew the pact which formally expired on June 28, 2026. This decision marks a significant shift in the nation’s approach to its rich marine resources.

Initially established in 2007, the fisheries accord saw multiple renewals, with its most recent extension occurring in 2021. Over its last five-year term, the agreement generated 17 billion CFA francs for the Gabonese state treasury.

The strategic move to discontinue the arrangement with the EU was first set in motion during the Council of Ministers meeting in June 2025. This initiative was driven by the transitional president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, signaling a pivotal departure after 19 years of collaborative fishing operations with the European bloc.

From Libreville’s perspective, the financial returns generated by the agreement were deemed inadequate, especially when weighed against the substantial value of marine life harvested from Gabonese waters. The government has openly expressed its dissatisfaction with the modest revenue streams derived from the long-standing partnership.

Looking ahead, the Gabonese government is now committed to prioritizing the domestic processing of tuna. This ambitious strategy aims to foster significant job creation, attract essential industrial investments, and substantially enhance the value added within the national territory, reflecting a new era in governance Africa focused on local economic empowerment.
