Gabon-EU partnership: strategic reforms and sustainable investments take center stage

The Gabonese government and the European Union (EU) convened yesterday at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace in the Cité de la Démocratie for the second session of their strategic partnership dialogue. Co-chaired by Gabon’s Vice-President of the Government, Hermann Immongault, and the EU Ambassador to Gabon, Cécile Abadie, this meeting followed the inaugural dialogue held in October 2024.

During the discussions, Mr. Immongault emphasized that the dialogue aligns with the Samoa Agreement, the foundational legal framework governing relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nations. He underscored the agreement’s call for “a more balanced, operational partnership with a stronger focus on the tangible impacts of public policies and investments.”

The session covered four key areas: political reforms and governance, economic prospects, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, and multilateral and regional cooperation.

At the close of the talks, both sides praised the institutional reforms implemented during Gabon’s transition period and exchanged perspectives on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No topic was off-limits,” Mr. Immongault noted, adding that the exchanges helped “clarify all outstanding issues.”

The economic agenda featured prominently, with discussions on Gabon’s structural reforms, business climate improvements, and measures to boost foreign investment. The EU’s Global Gateway strategy also featured in the conversations.

Environmental sustainability was another critical focus, as both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to sustainable forest management. They also explored cooperation opportunities in sustainable fishing, energy, and waste management.

The dialogue concluded with a reaffirmation of both Gabon and the EU’s dedication to multilateralism, highlighting strong alignment on regional and global challenges, including maritime security and regional integration.

Moving forward, the two partners intend to deepen their collaboration and continue consultations on jointly identified priorities, fostering an atmosphere of openness and mutual trust.
