English football legend James Milner retires after two decades in Premier League

At 40 years old, James Milner has called time on his illustrious playing career. This season alone, the English midfielder surpassed Gareth Barry’s long-standing Premier League appearance record, cementing his place among football’s most enduring figures in England’s top flight.

Retiring officially this week via his social media channels, Milner now sits at the summit of the Premier League’s all-time appearance charts. The 40-year-old Englishman achieved the milestone in February by playing his 654th match in the competition, overtaking Barry’s former record of 653 games.

Peter Shilton remains the competition’s most capped player with 848 top-flight appearances between 1965 and 1991. Seven players have featured more times than both Barry and Milner, including Manchester United’s former Welsh winger Ryan Giggs (672 matches, 632 of them in the Premier League era since 1992).

Journey through Liverpool and Manchester

Milner is wrapping up his 24th consecutive season in the Premier League. Brighton, his current club, marks the sixth top-flight team he’s represented, though with just 34 appearances so far. The Leeds-born player, who featured 48 times for his hometown club, has spent the bulk of his career at Liverpool (230 matches) and Manchester City (147), where he completed eight and five seasons respectively. He stands among only four players to have logged over 100 appearances for three different clubs (alongside Gareth Barry, Gary Speed and Rory Delap).

Milner’s Liverpool tenure was almost exclusively spent under one manager: Jürgen Klopp. The German coach oversaw more games with Milner on the pitch than any other boss, surpassing the 100 and 200-match thresholds (222 total). Roberto Mancini (82 matches) at Manchester City and Martin O’Neill (72) at Aston Villa follow in the rankings. In total, Milner has played under 21 different managers in the Premier League—including caretakers—making him the player with the most managerial connections in England’s top flight.

A quartet of decades between Liverpool and Manchester

Debuting in the Premier League at just 16 years and 310 days with Leeds, Milner has shared the pitch with or faced nearly every notable player since the competition’s 1992 inception. Of the more than 5,000 players to have graced Premier League pitches, 49% have taken the field alongside him at some point. His remarkable durability is further highlighted by another milestone: he’s the second-oldest goalscorer in Premier League history (39 years and 239 days on August 31, 2025).

Across his 24 Premier League campaigns, Milner has scored 56 goals and provided 90 assists. He was directly involved in scoring during 23 of those seasons (2024-25 was the only barren one), making him the player with the most seasons featuring at least one goal or assist. His 90 assists to 47 different teammates—a record in itself—place him tenth in the Premier League’s all-time assist charts, well behind Ryan Giggs’ 162.

One of those assists came on October 25 against Manchester United, delivered to Charalampos Kostoulas, a player born on May 30, 2007. By that date, Milner had already amassed 130 Premier League appearances. His time at Brighton also earned him another unique record: the widest age gap between a player and a manager younger than himself. He holds this distinction since playing under Fabian Hürzeler, who is 7 years and 53 days his junior.
