N’Djamena – The People’s Republic of China recently reaffirmed its commitment to Chad by delivering a substantial donation of 1,770 tonnes of rice. This crucial food aid arrives as Chad navigates significant climatic and economic hurdles, underscoring the enduring solidarity between the two nations. The official reception ceremony for this assistance took place on June 16, 2026, at the Radisson Blu hotel, presided over by Zara Mahamat Issa, Chad’s Minister of Social Action.

A steadfast partnership rooted in mutual support

During the event, Minister Zara Mahamat Issa highlighted that this act of generosity transcends mere material value. She emphasized that it symbolizes the profound friendship and robust partnership shared by Chad and China, built upon principles of mutual respect and reciprocal assistance. Drawing upon the Chinese proverb, « Dans une calamité, un seul grain de riz vaut une once d’or » (In a calamity, a single grain of rice is worth an ounce of gold), the Minister underscored the critical importance of this aid for vulnerable populations, including displaced persons, refugees, and families severely impacted by ongoing crises across society Africa.

Ahmat Mahamat Kosseï, the Director General of the National Office for Food Security (ONASA), conveyed his sincere appreciation for the timely donation. He noted that this support significantly bolsters the Chadian Government’s ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity, particularly under the leadership of Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. This contribution is vital for enhancing governance Africa in addressing humanitarian needs.

ONASA pledges rigorous management

Entrusted with the distribution of this rice, ONASA has committed to ensuring a transparent, efficient, and equitable allocation process. The Director General recalled China’s consistent support over the years, including previous donations of 5,000 tonnes in 2014 and 2017, 5,966 tonnes in 2019, and various consignments of wheat and rice in 2022 and 2025.

This latest shipment unequivocally demonstrates the shared resolve of Chad and China to strengthen the resilience of communities against vulnerabilities, thereby contributing to national social stability and sustainable development.

Wang Xining, the Chinese Ambassador to Chad, remarked on the severe repercussions Chad has recently faced due to conflicts in neighboring states. He cited the influx of refugees and extreme climatic conditions as significant challenges that heavily strain local food security. The Ambassador affirmed the deep solidarity of the Chinese government and people with Chad’s situation, reflecting a key aspect of African politics.

« We annually provide cereals valued at an average of nearly 2 billion CFA francs, » Ambassador Wang stated. He added that Chinese enterprises and expatriate communities actively embrace social responsibility, offering support to local communities through material donations and various outreach initiatives.

Acknowledging that material aid alone cannot resolve all issues, Ambassador Wang Xining explained that while immediate emergencies are met, the long-term solution lies in empowerment. Referencing the adage, « better to teach fishing than to give a fish, » he elaborated on China’s strategy of deploying agricultural technical missions. These missions collaborate with Chadian counterparts to test high-yield crops and deliver training in modern agricultural technologies, fostering sustainable growth.

Ambassador Wang Xining highlighted Chad’s exceptional agricultural potential, citing its abundant water resources, ample sunshine, fertile lands, and, crucially, a diligent and practical population.

This year marks a pivotal moment, characterized by the synergistic alignment of the two nations’ respective national development plans. Furthermore, the Chinese government has announced the implementation of zero customs tariffs for all African countries maintaining diplomatic relations with China, as explained by the Ambassador. The ceremony concluded with a visit to the Chagoua FDAR warehouse, located in the 7th arrondissement of N’Djamena.
