Children’s humanitarian crisis deepens in central Sahel

urgent aid needed for 7.5 million children in central Sahel

The Central Sahel region continues to grapple with a severe humanitarian crisis. Across Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, an estimated 7.5 million children urgently require assistance, despite some advancements in health, education, and civil registration services.

UNICEF urges global action

Following a 14-day mission to the region, Ted Chaiban, UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, issued a stark warning about a crisis that remains insufficiently recognized on the international stage.

He highlighted a region characterized by the enduring resilience of its communities, yet simultaneously scarred by the persistent effects of insecurity, climate disruptions, and profound socio-economic challenges.

displacement, violence, and inaccessible schools

Data compiled by UNICEF indicates that over 3.6 million individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to escalating violence. Furthermore, the United Nations has documented more than 1,500 grave violations against children, encompassing acts such as killings, abductions, and recruitment by armed factions.

The humanitarian emergency also profoundly impacts the education sector. By 2025, over 8,400 schools were rendered inaccessible, thereby denying countless children their right to learn and significantly increasing their vulnerability to illness, trauma, and extreme poverty.
