Chad secures sustainable urbanization deals at Baku’s world forum

The Minister of Land Planning, Urban Development and Housing recently unveiled the outcomes of Chad’s delegation to the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The results were shared during an in-house briefing attended by key stakeholders who joined the mission, including the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, senior officials from the National Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat.

Strategic discussions on urban growth and climate resilience

The Chadian delegation engaged in high-level discussions focusing on housing challenges, sustainable urbanization, and strengthening city resilience against climate change impacts. These conversations positioned Chad at the forefront of African urban policy debates, highlighting the country’s proactive stance on urban development.

Showcasing national initiatives

To amplify its urban agenda, Chad set up a dedicated pavilion at the forum. The exhibit spotlighted the nation’s flagship urban and housing projects, drawing international attention and fostering potential collaborations with global partners.

Upcoming UN-Habitat assessment mission

One of the most significant outcomes is the confirmed visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director to Chad from September 9–11, 2026. During this official trip, she will assess the country’s urban realities and review multiple project proposals put forward by national authorities, signaling strong international support for Chad’s urban transformation.

Access to green climate funds

Chad has been named among the top ten eligible countries for the United Nations Green Climate Fund, thanks to a joint initiative with Kenya. This milestone unlocks vital financing opportunities for urban resilience projects, particularly flood mitigation efforts in vulnerable regions.

New partnerships with regional neighbors

Side meetings with Kenyan and Moroccan counterparts laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in urban planning, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. Future joint missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are now in the pipeline to accelerate progress in these critical areas.

Transforming opportunities into action

The Minister emphasized that these breakthroughs represent more than just diplomatic gains—they provide a tangible pathway to convert international commitments into tangible urban development projects that directly benefit Chadian communities. This mission underscores Chad’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban growth, aligning with the strategic vision of the Head of State, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
