Bénin: new government’s inaugural directives focus on equity and security

President Wadagni outlines vision for equitable development and national security

On Thursday, 28 May 2026, President Romuald Wadagni led the first-ever cabinet meeting of his seven-year term, setting the tone for the 2026-2033 governance agenda. Just days after his official inauguration at the Palais de la Marina, the newly appointed ministers gathered to receive the Head of State’s foundational directives for their mandate.

Service to the Nation, not privilege

Addressing the assembled government, President Wadagni commended the ministers on their appointments, emphasizing that their roles were not positions of power but missions of responsibility dedicated to the greater good of Benin. He cautioned against viewing public office as a personal advantage, stressing that integrity, sobriety and unwavering solidarity must guide every decision.

Priorities for a balanced and secure Bénin

The president underscored two central pillars for the new administration: closing regional disparities and reinforcing national security. Ministers were tasked with accelerating equitable development across all communes, ensuring that infrastructure, essential services and public investments reach every corner of the country.

Security remains a top concern, particularly in light of recent armed incursions in northern regions. The executive was instructed to maintain and strengthen defense efforts, safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and protecting communities from ongoing threats.

Streamlined governance for greater efficiency

The government is introducing a structured schedule to enhance coordination and decision-making. From now on, the Council of Ministers will convene monthly on the first Wednesday, with additional extraordinary sessions as needed. The Interministerial Committee will meet twice monthly—on the first and third Mondays—while joint sessions will bring together ministers, sectoral leaders and the executive to tackle complex policy challenges.

This inaugural meeting signals the official launch of institutional operations under President Wadagni’s new term, following his swearing-in ceremony on 24 May 2026.
