Benin’s president wadagni begins term with poverty and security focus
Bénin’s new leadership sets ambitious agenda for 2026-2033
Just days after taking office, Bénin’s freshly inaugurated President Romuald Wadagni, who succeeds Patrice Talon, convened his first-ever Council of Ministers on May 28, 2026. This landmark gathering marked the official launch of his seven-year term, setting the stage for a governance agenda defined by bold priorities and structured execution.
The inaugural session was designed to reflect the values and ambitions that will steer his administration through 2033, with two pivotal national objectives clearly outlined. The first pillar centers on poverty eradication and closing stubborn development gaps across Bénin’s municipalities. Wadagni emphasized a stronger, more inclusive regional development strategy to help remote areas catch up with urban centers. His second key focus: national security, addressing ongoing regional instability with decisive action to protect Bénin’s borders and citizens.
A revamped governance rhythm
To ensure disciplined and responsive leadership, President Wadagni introduced a structured governance calendar. The Council of Ministers will now convene monthly on the first Wednesday, while the Interministerial Committee will meet twice monthly—on the first and third Mondays. Complementing these sessions, thematic Cabinet Councils will provide focused oversight of sector-specific policies. This framework underscores a commitment to rigor, consistency, and measurable progress in public administration.
As the meeting concluded, Wadagni urged his team to “roll up their sleeves and get to work”, reinforcing the belief that tangible results in governance will directly translate into better living conditions for the people. The session, both concise and substantive, laid bare the contours of a leadership style built on results-driven policies, equitable development, and national unity—challenges as vast as they are vital for Bénin’s future.
