Chad: man on trial for selling same plot to multiple buyers

On Monday, June 8, 2026, the N’Djamena high court held a session lasting over four hours in a case involving a man accused of selling the same piece of land to multiple individuals. The defendant is also charged with making death threats. He is accused of collecting sums ranging from 52 million to 99.5 million CFA francs from various buyers.

During the hearing, heated exchanges took place between the defense team and the lawyers representing the civil parties. The civil parties demand the refund of all amounts paid by their clients, plus damages.

The defense argued that their client had been held in pretrial detention by intelligence services for more than three months before being brought before the court, which they said is illegal. They maintain that the land legally belongs to their client, acting on behalf of his brothers, and is not disputed. They further claimed that the defendant’s paternal uncle manipulated some family members to lay claim to the property of his deceased brother, prompting the buyers to demand their money back.

Lawyers for the civil party described the defendant’s actions as fraud. The defense rejected this label, asserting that no property was transferred fraudulently and that articles 213 and 214 of the Chadian penal code do not apply in this case. The prosecutor called for a conviction, emphasizing that receiving such large sums from multiple people constitutes an offense, and requested a fine of 500,000 CFA francs.

Both sides are pressing the judges to rule in their favor. A similar hearing for the same case took place on June 1. The court has adjourned for deliberation. Meanwhile, the defendant remains in custody at Klessoum prison.
