Historic break in diplomatic relations

Burkina Faso has announced the immediate termination of all diplomatic relations with France. This unprecedented decision was formalized through an official government communiqué dated June 26, 2026.

The statement cited fundamental violations of mutual respect and national sovereignty as the primary reasons behind this historic move. The Burkinabe government emphasized that the necessary conditions for maintaining balanced bilateral relations—based on reciprocal trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and absolute respect for national sovereignty—no longer exist.

The communiqué highlighted several critical grievances against France’s current administration:

  • Persistent interference in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs, including alleged support for subversive networks and terrorist groups destabilizing the country and the broader Sahel region;
  • Openly displayed neocolonial ambitions, including active backing of destabilizing forces;
  • Biased rhetoric and international smear campaigns aimed at isolating Burkina Faso from the global community.

The Burkinabe government stressed that this decision in no way undermines the deep historical, human, cultural, and social ties between the Burkinabe and French peoples. The move exclusively targets the institutional framework of state-to-state diplomatic relations.

Government reassures citizens and reaffirms sovereignty

The statement concluded with a strong reaffirmation of Burkina Faso’s commitment to protecting foreign nationals—particularly French citizens—residing in the country. Authorities urged citizens to maintain responsibility, restraint, and civility toward all foreign residents, in strict accordance with national laws.

The government also underscored its determination to pursue an independent foreign policy, emphasizing:

  • Diversification of international partnerships;
  • Strengthening South-South cooperation;
  • Development of balanced relations with all nations;
  • Promotion of peace, security, and sustainable development.

Burkina Faso remains open to dialogue with the international community, provided it is based on mutual respect, reciprocity, sovereign equality, and the defense of legitimate national interests. The government expressed its commitment to building a more just, peaceful, and united world with like-minded nations.

The official statement was signed by Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, Government Spokesperson and Officer of the Order of the Stallion.
